Why Immersion?

More than 40 years of research consistently documents the power of immersion programs to help students attain high levels of second language proficiency. No other type of instruction, short of living in a second-language environment, is as successful.

Young children especially thrive in this type of instructional environment. Happily, language immersion is also the least expensive way to deliver second-language instruction.

Proven Benefits

Who Can Participate?

The dual immersion program seeks to enroll students of varying background and all abilities. Applications are open to all students entering 1st grade, (Kindergarten at Midvale Elementary). However, it may not be a wise choice for children experiencing significant communication delays in their primary language.

How do I apply for a dual immersion program?

The online application process for 2017-18 is open from October 3, 2016 until November 23, 2016. After November 23, 2016, Canyons School District will continue to receive application past the deadline if there are still spots available in the programs. If program are full, applicants will be placed on that program's wait lists.

How are students selected for the program?

School and district personnel will determine the number of spaces that will be available for students enrolled at each school, as well as spaces for students not currently enrolled and applying for special permit. The number of spaces available in each category is based on enrollment and may be different at each school, depending on the needs of the school to maintain the traditional and dual immersion programs.

In the lottery process, students with siblings already enrolled in a dual immersion program will receive priority consideration. Furthermore, our goal in a Dual Immersion classroom is to have 50% English speakers and 50% target language speakers. Therefore, students who proficiently speak the target language will receive priority consideration.
